Ball Python Housing

Children and Ball python

I jsut bought a ball python, and I have a 3 yr old son. Is this a mistake? My whole family is stressing me about the snake and my son. Is there really anything to worry about them?

One more question

I’ve read conflicting information about water dishes. I’ve read both that they need a bigger water dish to soak in, and I’ve read that they don’t really care for soaking. Which have you found is right?

I just changed a bunch

I recently bought an adult Ball Python. His previous enclosure included a half log to hide in and a water dish. Heating was a florescent bulb turned on during the day and off at night, and an under tank heater that always stays on. I didn’t have a thermometer yet, so I’m not sure where the temperatures were at, but he seemed fine. He spent most of his time coiled up in the log at the basking side under the light.

Yesterday, I went out and about a bigger water dish, a thermometer, and a 75 watt infrared bulb. Now the basking temperature is at about 82 and the cool side at about 75. Since the change, my snake was avoided the basking side.

I don’t know if this is good or not. How much time does a snake usually spend in each side of the tank? Did he get used to colder temperatures and now this is too hot? Or is this normal?

The thermometer

Where should I place it in the tank for optimal results? Towards the bottom? Towards the top? Or does it matter very little? Also, would it be better to measure the cool spot or the warm spot?
